Using art to build connection beyond the art room

I believe art education can strengthen a school community by giving students meaningful ways to recognize others, contribute to shared goals, and use their creativity to communicate.

Throughout my teaching experience, I have created opportunities for students to use art for connection, gratitude, and service.

ART AS COMMUNITY CONNECTION

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I guided students in creating thank-you videos recognizing first responders and their service to the community.

I also organized a project in which students created get-well cards for a child they had never met who was spending an extended period of time at Boston Children's Hospital during the holidays. Students used their artwork to communicate encouragement and kindness to someone outside their immediate school community.

ART THAT SUPPORTS SCHOOL GOALS

I have developed collaborative school art projects that connect visual art with broader school initiatives and administrative goals.

These projects give students a visible role in strengthening school culture while allowing the art curriculum to contribute to the larger life of the school.

STUDENT ART + FUNDRAISING

I have overseen Square One Art fundraising efforts, helping transform student artwork into opportunities for families to support the school community.

COMPETITION + EXHIBITION

I have also supported student participation in state and Scholastic Art competitions, giving students opportunities to develop work beyond the classroom, prepare artwork for submission, and experience art as something they can share with a broader audience.

MAKING ART MAKES CONNECTION

I want students to understand that art is not only something they make for a grade. Art can communicate, connect, contribute, and make a difference.
